What is disturbing is the way Mr. Ripley can be anyone, do anything. The Talented Mr. Ripley is ominous and foreboding, suspenseful and exciting, slow and emotional. This novel introduced the character of Tom Ripley, who returns in four subsequent novels. It has been adapted numerous times for film, including the 1999 film of the same name Plot.

The Talented Mr. Ripley, her first Ripley novel, published in 1955, shows Ripley in the process of inventing himself and finding his life's work. He was a poor man who wanted to be a rich man, an unknown man who wanted not to be famous but simply to be someone else. Some men are envious of other men's cars, or wives, or fortunes.

The consensus reads, "With Matt Damon's unsettling performance offering a darkly twisted counterpoint to Anthony Minghella's glossy direction, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a suspense thriller that lingers." I really loved this book! I have seen The Talented Mr. Ripley (the movie) several times and wanted to see what the book was like. It is mostly like the movie, and there are some changes.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is extremely well-executed at most levels. The cast is exceptional throughout, and Matt Damon proves that he is quite capable of playing a sinister role convincingly. Playing the well-heeled, articulate Marge works well for Paltrow, displaying her usual regal presence.

The Talented Mr. Ripley often feels like an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. But even in his boldest pushing of the envelope, Hitchcock avoided Ripley‘s homoerotic tension and extremely graphic violence. Furthermore, it’s disturbing how this film manipulates the audience into sympathizing with Tom Ripley.
